PostSubject: No Backbox = Crap MPG?    Wed 24 Aug 2011, 12:09 am

i know im a prick for not having one for starters..
but my oem one was pissin me off an rusty n rattly so ive took it off until i get a new one (soon)

But yeah i've seen a few threads on other forums etc n some say yes some say no.. but these are for dodge's n shit so..

Anyone ran no backbox on here on a 1.4? Cause i just went for a lil spin n my needle seemed to drop quite badly..
I admit i was a prick an gave it the beans a little bit but still... i dno if im just being overly conscious

its all standard apart from a 4-2-1 cat etc's still there n middle box

(P.s its not anywhere near as loud as i thought it would be, its SILENT at idle)

What you need young sir is a decent De cat pipe and a back box.

I would not recomend running your car without a back box on 1, it sounds shite 2, have a think where your fuel tank is........ yup... right where the pipe is....and it gets hotttttt...

Saifskyline has a back box fs - http://www.civiclife.net/board/topic/105818-jap-backbox/

& a decat can be purchased off ebay - or you could bash the mesh out of your existing cat but this will flash up a Check Engine light off the o2 sensor.

Will make a Very slight difference but hardly noticeable, not as much as a doggy o2 sensor for instance.

Powelly - i know i know. I was VERY paranoid driving up the road knowing my car could set on fire at any minute. its starting to piss me off now as well, i think its cause im used to my being silent car before though :\

Sukhy - i'm tempted but i'm not to keen on powerflow systems tbh..

Aky - My 02 sensors dodgy anyway tbh but i think my cars started to get used to it :S my mpg was terrible at the start an now its all of a sudden got better lol.. i still get my engine light on every now n then but hay hoe

I don't think you should worry about the car going up, I've seen many many cars (s bodies, rx's,) all running just pipe from downpipe, it way get hot but think about it, the nackbox will restrict flow therefore getting hotter. A straight pipe will be free flowing allowing the flow to be quicker (and the pipe will be smaller than a backbox therefore further away anyway)

When I had my eg I ran it with no pipe at all from the de cat and only slightly noticed fuel consumption increase

Im thinkin of goin down the straight pipe ruite tbh.. my middle box jus scrapes off EVERYTHING anyway, my uncles got a decent pipe bender at his unit n a welder so.. i reckon i'll get pissed off with all the noise after a bit though, especially in a 1.4 Rolling Eyes We'll see, We shall see. What a Face

My rx7 is noisy, same as my preludes, mr2 and civic. But after a while I just got use to it. Feels weird driving quiet cars now lol

no backbox is cool, the fuel tank will not be an issue unless you plan on pouring fuel onto the zorst, even then it probably wouldnt ignite.

alot of cars in the US have there exhausts just end after the LCA, drag cars etc

it will be fine man
